In the heart of an impenetrable and dark jungle, far from any civilization, lie the ruins of a mysterious and cursed temple, which is said to house one of the greatest treasures that has ever existed. According to legend, deep inside, behind hundreds of deadly traps, lies the blood-red ruby, which has almost never brought its owner anything good and is known among the natives as the „Heart of the Devil“. And it is precisely this treasure that a group of brave archaeologists, driven by a thirst for adventure and greed, want to unearth.

In German-speaking countries, this typical game of the 90s was marketed and extensively advertised under the somewhat cumbersome title: „The Hunt for the Blood Red Ruby“.

It is a childhood memory and it brings back a wonderfully nostalgic part of the feelings of that time.

What immediately catches your eye is the opulent equipment and the incredibly elaborate presentation. Lovingly designed 3D elements, the instructions in the form of an adventure comic and harmonious drawings and graphics all around make this cult game a real eye-catcher.

The mechanical gear system placed in the middle, which not only changes the game board but also transports the figures across the field and into the inner temple, is likely to cast a fascinating spell over many an adventurer.

Added to this is the functional, giant idol statue, which contains the shimmering ruby of desire, and the detailed game pieces. All of this can make up for the rather simple game principle purely visually. This is not a complex, multi-layered adventure game that extends over hours or even several sessions. It is a dice game that is also suitable for younger participants and feels a bit like „Ludo“. The tasks that the players complete have to fit well with the setting and can certainly have their appeal in an illustrious, happy group.

The aim is to reach the base camp, the starting point for all players, with the gemstone that gives the game its name in your hand. To do this, you must roll the dice to lead your character into the spooky temple in the jungle in order to pull a legendary golden sword out of a stone. With this sword you then make your way over the „wheels of death“ to the inner temple, where you can try your luck in 6 notches set into the idols with the help of the sword. If you have found the right place, you will be rewarded with the blood-red ruby. You leave the temple with this and win when you return.

The basic idea is so simple. The fun of the game is the fact that other players can take both the sword and the ruby from the owner by occupying the same space as the owner. This works with your own figure or the special figure of the robber, which brings a small tactical element to the game. The objects can change hands countless times before a decision is made and it is the same feeling as when you throw someone out of Ludo.

If you want to revive old childhood memories and are not afraid of a simply designed but high-quality game, then Curse of the Idol is a very good choice.
